NOSA Pro-active in creating environmental awareness at school level

Calabash Trust is a Non-Profit Organisation in Port Elizabeth, South Africa who supports and empowers schools, teachers and parents in previously disadvantaged communities surrounding the city.

Our core business is creating schools of excellence in these informal settlements, and in the ten years since Calabash Trust was founded, we have established a total of six programmes, each with its separate projects.

Part of creating schools of excellence is having a clean, green working and recreational environment. This has been particularly challenging in these areas due to a lack of understanding the reasoning behind waste management and respect for the environment. Thus, we have been researching sustainable programmes and models to implement in order to combat this problem.

We encountered NOSA, who offered to facilitate an interactive environmental awareness production free of charge one Friday each month.

Their first presentation on the 12th of March was a huge success. They visited two of our cluster schools – Emafini Primary School and Joe Slovo Primary School - in which they presented their production for the Grade 5 children.

One of the schools had no electricity for the day but the NOSA team was still able to improvise and teach the children about the environment and keeping it clean. The presentation was followed by a clean-up of the schools by the Grade 5’s. Black bags were provided by the Municipality and at the end a total of 90 bags of rubbish were collected between the two schools!

Thank you very much to the NOSA team. We look forward to your future presentations as well as regular clean-ups in the schools and surrounding community. Together we can make a big difference.

Kind Regards
The Calabash Trust team
